Santa Clause is an old tradition. It reminds children that they should be good all year long so they will get lots of presents for Christmas. What kid wants to mess that up? They may try but ultimately fail so they have to be reminded to be good. I know it's a lie. But it puts the concept of good vs. evil in a way the child can understand.
